Mr. President. May 7 to 14. 1980. will mark the second Asian Pacific American Heritage Week in our Nation of immigrants. The first week was held last year with numerous cultural. educational. and political activities across the Nation. that recognized achievements and celebrated the strengths of this diverse racial minority. There are approximately 4 million Asian and Pacific Americans in our country today. And we have recently welcomed many more: The Indochinese refugees from Southeast Asia. It is part of our Nations heritage to keep our doors open for the persecuted. the homeless and the hungry. Permit me to quote from President Carters proclamation: In spite of violence inflicted on their peoples and cultures.
