Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960224572

Ida Nudel has risked her own life as an activist and leader of the Moscow Helsinki Monitoring Group before being sent into a 5year Siberian exile in 1978. Ida devoted herself to helping fellow refuseniks with those daily tasks which most of us take for granted. Her courage. inner strength. and sensitivity to the psychological needs of people suffering severe mental and physical harassment due to their wish to live in Israel gave nourishment to the Jewish emigration movement in the Soviet Union. She delivered packages and mail to refuseniks which the Soviet authorities would have refused to deliver as a form of harassment. Her sensitivity to the psychological consequences of ostracism and of contnued physical and mental abuse suffered by the refuseniks led her to devote untold effort to bolster their morale against the increasing societal pressure.
