They were forbidden to sell their houses or livestock. under the pretense that their absence was temporary. and many saw their possessions turned over by the government to Moslem immigrants before they even began their march. The trip was by foot through harsh. dry country in the hot season. Many died of hunger and thirst. or the sheer physical hardship.
