Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960223197

Mr. Speaker. I join with my colleagues today in commemorating Armenian Memorial Day. marking the 65th anniversary of the genocide of the Armenian population. In 1915. almost 2 million Armenians were killed in the systematic deportation and slaughter in the declining Ottoman Empire. Today. we mourn the murder of these innocent people. and the destruction of their communities which had existed for over 3.000 years. After a long struggle. Armenian independence was finally won in 1918. Armenians began to build a country where they would be safe and free. but in 1920. the infant Armenian State was crushed by Soviet and Turkish forces.
