The melting pot is not a fashionable symbol these days. because some writers and thinkers prefer to dwell on what was lost. But can there be any doubt that it was far better for all concerned to have become assimilated. to speak a common tongue. to share the same economic and political ideals? It has often occurred to me that immigrants. and particularly the children of immigrants. are the best Americans we have. the most thankful and devoted. and I think we are denying the validity of two centuries of experience when we take away the motivation or the need that people have traditionally felt to learn English as quickly as possible when they come to live in America.
