She insisted the Poconos needed the playhouse. bought it. and directed her attention to its development. Mrs. Martens was a deeply humanitarian individual. In 1968. when her native land was overrun by Soviet troops. she opened the doors of Mount Airy Lodge to Czechoslovakian refugees. offering them food. shelter. clothing. and employment. When Hurricane Agnes devastated northeastern Pennsylania. the Mount Airy facilities were made available to those whose homes were destroyed. She spearheaded fundraising efforts for the benefit of flood victims and insured that shipments of food and clothing were dispatched to disaster areas.
