Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960209012

Within the United States. those who ask us to live up to our basic principles have sometimes made many feel uncomfortable. but we recognize that they play a necessary role. Toleration of criticism and unpopular views is the ultimate test of any society. The fact that the Soviet Union views religious observances. expressions of dissent. and the desire to emigrate as threats to their Government can only be seen as a failure to establish a just society. Despite protestations to the contrary. such actions can only be seen as the brutal face of tyranny. We renew our call for the release of Anatoly Shcharansky.
