I am sorry that I am not going to be able to tell you all of the information which I think is so important to this Congress. so I do have permission to revise and extend my remarks. and I shall do so. But I would like to point out one thing in closing. When we speak about refugees. refugees are not fungible. In our country. where the population is. in large part. made up of people of a Euroueantype background. or from the northern portion of Asia. here we are. bringing in a lot of people from Vietnam. Laos. Cambodia and the like. who are perfectly decent people but they do not fit our society. they do not fit our economy. and the task of assimilating them is horrendous. A recent study in Los Angeles County showed that 88.5 percent of our refugees from Southeast Asia cannot speak English. We have also found that the vast majority of them had no occupation in their home country. They were people without status in their own society. without a job in their own economy.
