Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960202786

Cambodia is not the first. just the latest great tragedyand the Senate is not showing much interest in making it the last. The facts are staggering. The sheer scale of the suffering is so incomprehensible. we may tend to push it to the backs of our minds and tell ourselves it cannot be. The current population of Cambodia. the task force reports. is about 4 million. down by onehalf from 8 million in 1970. Nearly 1 million refugees are crowded together near the border of Thailand. Hundreds of thousands more are fleeing towards the Thai border. The task force believes nearly an entire generation of Cambodia children has been wiped out.
