Speaker. the Smithsonian Institution today begins a 3day colloquium designed to recall an aspect of one of the most dreadful periods in world history. Entitled. "The Muses Flee Hitler." the colloquium focuses on the flight of European artists and intellectuals to the United States between 1930 and 1945. the years of Nazi terror and conquest. The program concludes an observance of the 100th birthday of Albert Einstein. the most renowned of those refugees who found in the United States a haven which offered them an opportunity to continue their work and contribute to the intellectual. cultural. and scientific development of their adopted nation. The benefits that have accrued to us from these remarkable people are incalculable and I wish to congratulate the Smithsonian Institution and its Hirshhorn Museum for reminding us of those refugees and the debt we owe them.
