Chairman. I have listened all day to all these pious platitudes and misplaced hopes feeling that perhaps I might hear some refutation of the points I raised against this legislation earlier today. I have heard none. including the socalled assurances about emigration. the socalled assurances about textiles being protected. and certainly no one stood up and tried to contend that human rights are protected in Red China. which I think was a prudent position for the proponents to avoid. Last night the President said something in his address and I think we should keep it in mind. and I quote: Our deep commitment to human rights and to meeting human needs has improved our .relationship with much of the third world. Our decision to normalize relations with the Peoples Republic of China will help to preserve peace and stability in Asia and in the Western Pacific.
