Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960186544

Mr. Speaker I would like to take this moment to reflect upon not only the grief and tragic imprisonment of Anatol Shcharansky. but also upon the situation of the thousands of Soviet Jews separated from their relatives and denied the right to emigrate from the Soviet Union in order to join their loved ones. Today it is almost 3 years since the arrest of Anatoly Shcharansky on charges of treason and crimes against the state. His imprisonment is an unfortunate indicator of the direct violation of human rights in the Soviet Union. those rights which have so much meaning and importance to people everywhere.
