Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960186542

I believe that we must send clear signals to the Soviets that we will not stand still and watch them blatantly abuse the rights of innocent people through force as they have in Afghanistan. I applaud President Carters decision to halt grain sales to the Soviets and to call for a boycott of the 1980 Olympics as long as they are held in Moscow. Our country should take a similar posture toward the Soviet Unions emigration policies. The better news of this past years emigration figures must not lead to any lessening of our resolve to help those who are seeking to emigrate. Last Sunday Anatoly Shcharansky turned 1 year older. He now suffers from severe headaches and a loss of vision.
