Speaker. another year has passed in the continuing efforts to effect the release of Anatoly Shcharansky. Another year he has suffered the humiliation and loneliness of Soviet prison life. For the "crime" of requesting to emigrate from the Soviet Union to Israel. his punishment is 13 years of imprisonment. And now. after 2 years of degradation. Mr. Shcharansky celebrates his 32d birthday in ill health. and thousands of miles away from his family. Shcharanskys plight is shared by thousands of other Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate. Many of them are forbidden to seek employment and educational opportunities within their own country. nor are they allowed to go abroad to seek these opportunities elsewhere. Some hundreds. like Shcharansky. are imprisoned because of their desires and beliefs.
