The testimony received was generally favorable regarding approval of the trade agreement and extension of MFN treatment. and the subcommittees questions developed the issues relevant to consideration of the agreement. However. members of the subcommittee did not believe that the hearing developed sufficient information on all the issues. Therefore. on December 14. 1979. the committee met with Deputy Secretary of State Warren Christopher regarding emigration and other matters relating to the PRC. Based on these sessions. the committee met on December 18 and ordered the resolution of approval favorably reported. The principal provisions of the proposed trade agreement are similar to the provisions contained in the agreements the United States has with Romania and Hungary which were previously concluded and approved.
