New York Times article on these recent events be included in the RECORD. The task force has had numerous meetings with State Department officials. White House staff. and INS officials regarding the treatment of Haitian refugees. Continual frustration with the resolution of this issue has brought the caucus to the conclusion that granting refugee status. that is. political asylum. is the only practical. just. and human tarian way to resolve the plight of the. 8.000 to 10.000 black "boat people." These feelings have been commun cated to the President. and we hai asked for meetings with Chairman Zbig niew Brzezinski of the National Securit Council. We also joined with hundre of other individuals and organizations i making a presentation to the Selec Commission on Immigration and Refu gee Policy on December 4 of this year i: Miami. A recent editorial in the Miarr News. which I ask to have included i the RECORD forcefully summarizes ou position. and the outrage of many blac] Americans and others regarding th treatment of Haitian refugees. Indeed. would also like to submit for the REcoR two letters to President Carter from th CBC and approximately 125 black lead. ers in Florida calling for equal treatmen for these black "boat people." I want to thank the gentleman frorr Texas for these special orders on Haitiar refugees. I wish to assure my colleague.. that the Congressional Black Caucus wil continue its efforts toward obtaining political asylum for our Haitian brother. and sisters.
