Mr. Speaker. all of us have been moved by the plight of the Vaschenko and Chmykalov families who have been in the U.S. Embassy in Moscow for nearly a year and a half. We continue to be appalled by the refusal of the Soviet Government to permit this family to emigrate. And yet. these denials. cruel as they are. do not represent the totality of that Governments actions against this family. Pentecostals. such as the Vaschenkos and the Chmykalovs. have been subjected to particularly harsh treatment for merely attempting to express their religious beliefs. In recent weeks. Alexander Vaschenko. the 20yearold son whose parents languish in our Embassy. has been selected for additional punishment.
