Speaker. on Monday of this week Mother Teresa of Calcutta received the Nobel Peace Prize. Since the announcement of the award in October. I have taken the time to reflect on the Nobel Committees decision in the context of present world conditions. including the Iranian crisis and the refugee problem in Southeast Asia. My view is that the Nobel Committee made an extraordinarily wise decision in recognizing Mother Teresa and her mission on Earth. In a sense. the award honors all the missionaries of charity. From India to New Guinea. from Tanzania to the south Bronx. these unselfishand generally unrecognizedindividuals unceasingly work each day to find and care for the abandoned and forgotten of the world. .Their devotion deserves our prayers and support. I also am impressed by the principles upon which the prize was premised. The Nobel Committees announcement stated: This year. the world has turned its attention to the plight of children and refugees. and these are precisely the categories for whom Mother Teresa has for so many years worked so selflessly. By giving the peace prize to Mother Teresa. the committee implicitly awarded it to the people with whom she toils: the children. refugees. sick. dying. poor. and oppressed of the world. Mr. Speaker.
