Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960166730

Working closely with Rabbi Hecht and other community leaders. our efforts to help the Jews of Syria have met with some success. There has been a relaxation of many socioeconomic restrictions once t placed upon the Jewish community. ine cluding the right to buy and sell property. to travel freely throughout Syria. and s to practice their faith openly. We were I also able to arrange proxy marriages for a dozen young Syrian women to American men. the first officially sanctioned emigration of Syrian Jews in over 30 years. But Rabbi Hecht. and the Syrian Jewish community in Brooklyn which he serves and I represent. remain deeply concerned over the refusal of the Syrian Government to permit those Jews who want to leave Syria to do so. With this help and strong support. we were able to pass a concurrent resolution a few months ago calling upon the Government of Syria. on humanitarian grounds. to let the Jewish community emigrate. In these and other important endeavors. I have leaned heavily on the advice. wisdom. guidance. and good offices of Rabbi Hecht.
