In 1919. after she had served for 2 years as executive director of the New York Council of Organization for War Service. she was made a member of the New York State Industrial Commission. In 1921 she became director of the Council on Immigrant Education. in 1922 a member of the New York State Industrial Board and in 1926 its chairman. In 1929 Roosevelt. when he became Governor. made her Industrial Commissioner of New York State. "Madame" Perkins. as she was known. served as Secretary of Labor under President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 to 1945. longer than any other Secretary of Labor.
