Not only had their urban areas aged. but the way in which people used their urban areas had changed. Lifestyles. to use an overused word. had dictated a new relationship between the old established inner cities and the urban inhabitants. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the industrial cities of the Northeast. those cities that sprang to life in the early 19th century through the marriage of the industrial revolution and the flood of European immigrants. They followed a standard pattern: A strong central core of retail and business activity. usually surrounded by factories which. in turn. were surrounded by modest worker homes. Time and change. including everything from transportation to building codes. eventually took their toll.
