Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960154312

Mr. Speaker. the subject of this resolution. Ida Nudel. first applied for a visa to emigrate from the Soviet Union to Israel in 1971. Since then she has repeatedly been denied a visa. Over the years she has devoted her life to the wellbeing of others who wanted to emigrate and who were repressed by Soviet authorities. In fact. she became known as the guardian n angel of those who dissented and suffered within the Soviet Union. d Finally. in 1978. Ida Nudel was arrested and charged with "malicious e hooliganism." Her alleged crime was s hanging a banner from her balcony o which read "KGB. Give Me My Visa." r Her trial was a sham. She was allowed no witnesses to testify on her behalf. - Without any semblance of due process. s she was convicted and sentenced to exile in Siberia for a period of 4 years. Now this woman who has done so o much to help others is in need of help - herself.
