Mr. Timermans freedom was granted less than 1 week after the InterAmerican Human Rights Commission. a commission of the OAS. visited Argentina and met with many political prisoners. including Jacobo Timerman. I commend the Government of Argentina and President Jorge Videla for taking this muchneeded step toward the restoration of human rights and freedom of emigration. President Videla has spoken many times of his dedication to the principles of human freedom. and has advocated an end to the extralegal governmental activities. it is gratifying that the President has supported his words with action. The case of Jacobo Timerman acts as a catalyst to bring the cause of international human rights once more to the attention of the world.
