According to the United Nations Disaster Relief Office. over 1.200 people have died in the Dominican Republic. Over onethird of the dead were victims of an esepecially tragic catastrophe in the small town of Villa de Ocoa. in which 400 persons taking shelter in a church were drowned by a flooding river. According to the latest estimates of the U.S. Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance there are over 105.000 refugees. and up to 160.000 homelessall this in a population of only 5 million. The transportation infrastructure is completely destroyed in some areas. The health care systems have broken down. exposing large sections of the population to contagious disease.
