I take this time to address the House on the passing of Joseph Cardinal Mindzenty. who died in exile in Vienna on Tuesday at the age of 83. He was a heroic. stalwart champion of the people of Hungary who fought against the Communist takeover of his country. Cardinal Mindzenty was tortured and imprisoned by the Communists in 1949 when he resisted their takeover of his homeland. and as the Members will recall. he spent almost 23 years of his life either in prison or in the U.S. mission in Budapest as a refugee. The only freedom he enjoyed during those years was a brief period during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Throughout his life.
