Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940053485

Let it not be said by our children or our grandchildren that we failed in our obligations when the going got tough and thereby helped to extinguish the torch of freedom. not only for others. but ultimately for ourselves. Perhaps the most eloquent symbol of our past tradition is the Statue of Libberty. overlooking New York Harbor. It was given to us by the French in recognition of our contribution to the cause of freedom but. for almost a century now. it has held aloft a beckoning hand to millions of immigrants who have come to our shores to enjoy the fruits of liberty. It would indeed be a shame if we forgot how good those fruits tasted or how much human suffering would have resulted had we had not been allowed to walk down the gangplank. Forour own sakes. if for no one elses. we cannot forget.
