Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940052188

I commend the Senator on his statement and wish to observe. in connection with what he said about history not being kind enough to allow this to happen in a time of relative prosperity. that during the depths of the depression. we received tens of thousands of immigrants annually into this country at a time when privation and unemployment were in a much worse state than they are now. I like to think that now. with an even larger population and a less severe recession than we had at that time. we shall not turn our backs on our moral and humanitarian responsibilities. I believe this country is big enough. flexible enough. and resilient enough that we can absorb the relatively small number of people that will be thrust on the labor force.
