Speech #940051401

They are doing it again. They are shopkeepers. doctors. lawyers. engineers. businessmen. trade unionists. journalists. They are a cross section of the same kind of people who have been making up America ever since the first immigrants came over here and met with the Indians. I hope and believe that the mood of America is changing. I sincerely plead for a realization in this country of what it was that made America great. of what it is that keeps America strong. of what the inscription on the Statue of Liberty. at the entrance to our harbor. reads. the first sight that many immigrants see. of what we in this country have always been proudthat we are a nation of immigrants. We are a successful melting pot. We are a people who have welcomed people.
