Mr. Speaker. we are all aware of the persecution by the Soviet Government of its Jewish population. and especially of those Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate. My attention has been brought to the case of Mikhail Levev. who was arrested 1 hour before he was scheduled to emigrate. detained for 2Y2 years. and sentenced to death for bribery. This crime normally carries a maximum penalty of 5 years imprisonment. I have written to the Soviet Procurator General on behalf of Mlkhail Leviev. and include the text of my letter in the RECORD. I would urge my colleagues who share my concern to make their feelings known to the appropriate Soviet officials.
