Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940047248

The North Vietnamese flagrantly violate the Paris peace agreement. but the world looks to the United States as the villain in this piececertainly not "peace." My own colleagues berate us for our lack of compassion toward the South Vietnamese nationalsthey say we must help certain ones of them because they helped us. they worked for us. No one bothers to mention that they were only helping us because we were helping them in the first place. This call for help in evacuating and resettling the Vietnamese refugees was of particular concern to me in considering my vote on the measure. As a humanitarian gesture. I would like to be able to support the call and to endorse the steps taken by Attorney General Edward Levi to permit a large number of Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees to enter the United States. However. I believe there is another side to the story which must be heard and given consideration before we proceed in that direction.
