Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940046670

MONDALE. OXXI737Part 9 and NELSON. I am today introducing a bill to provide for the issuance of a special postage stamp in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Norweigian immigration to the United States. As we look forward to the celebration of the Bicentennial of the birth of our Nation in 1976. it is altogether fitting and appropriate that we recall and commemorate the importance of the year 1975 for citizens of Norwegian descent. The history of the United States has been greatly enriched by the contributions of NorwegianAmericans. The first organized emigration from Norway began on July 4. 1825. when a small group of Norwegian pioneers sailed out of Stavanger. Norway aboard the sloop Restaurationen. These 46 pioneers looked with deep hope toward the freedom and opportunity which awaited them in America.
