Along the way these helpless people were subjected to inhuman tortures. and mutilation. to rape and massacre. and those who survived these initial brutalities. died one by one from exhaustion. disease. and starvation. The roads where these caravans passed were piled high with the corpses of these innocent victims of the Turks. When the carnage was over. 1.500.000 martyrs had been slain and another million had been ruthlessly torn up from their ancient homeland and deported to the desolate deserts to die. Not only had the Turks attempted to annihilate the Armenian nation. but at the same time they tried to obliterate every trace of the 3.000yearold Armenian divilization. Universities. libraries. churches and monasteries were burned. and with them. irreplaceable antiques. paintings. books. and relics were destroyed.
