Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940034055

Fuictioal budget category it is that the arguments of those who said over the years that the South Vietnamese lacked the will to fight and that the people of that country longed for the communism that descended on the North after World War II were dead wrong. The people today are voting. as they did after the signing of the Geneva Accords in 1954. with their feet. Hundreds of thousands of refugees are fleeing. not back to the safety of the North which. after all. is being neither bombed nor attacked. but south into the cities and enclaves still held by the Government of South Vietnam. They realize. as we do not. that when and if the Communists finally take over. there will indeed be a bloodbath of almost unprecedented proportions. I ask unanimous consent that two items appearing in this mornings Wall Street Journal be printed in the RECORD. The first is an editorial on the question of the refugees and the evidence provided by the fact that hundreds of thousands are seeking what little protection they can get from their government i the face of the Communist offensive. The second is an article by Samuel Adams on projections that. once they take over. the North Vietnamese might easily execute at least a hundred thousand South Vietnamese "enemies of the people." Mr. Adams asks us to face up both to our responsibility and to the reality of the world we live in.
