Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940023855

I believe that there is an urgent necessity for the Government to provide some means of livelihood to our unemployed. Unfortunately. the number will rise well above the shockingly high 7.5 million at the present time. I also recommended a direct Federal public employment program so long as unemployment remains above 8 percent. I am very pleased to see that the Workmans Circle has made similar recommendations. This was done as part of a set of proposals put forth by the organization. The Workmans Circle. which was founded by emigrant workmen. is a fraternal society. Its President. Harold Ostroff. is also vice president of the United Housing Foundation.
