Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940016695

Reports from Addis Ababaincluding official reports to our own Government and elsewherefully confirm the massive humanitarian problems facing the Ethiopian people. Fighting in Eritrea has created severe hardship for thousands of civilians caught between the forces of the Ethiopian Army and the Eritrean liberation organizations. Whatever the outcome of this civil conflict. the people of Eritrea have been totally cut off from food and medical assistance as a result of the fighting. Refugees from the province tell of much suffering and severe malnutrition. And civilian casualtiesboth dead and woundednumber in the hundreds. if not thousands. In Ethiopias two droughtstricken provincesWollo and Tigrethe situation is just as desperate.
