Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940015996

In the absence.of any indication whatsoever that the PLO is prepared to accept a resolution of the Palestinian problem which would require them to recognize the legitimacy of the State of Israel. the Rabin government can hardly be expected to acquiesce to their suicidal demands. There is. quite clearly. a Palestinian problem. In one way or another the refugee situation must be solved. It is most unfortunate. in this regard. that at the same time Israel was absorbing 600.000 Jewish refugees from the Arab and North African countries. the Arab States refused to absorb a similar number of Palestinian refugees from Israelalthough by language. culture. and background. they had the capacity to easily bring them into the mainstream of their national life. Population transfers have. after all. taken place fairly frequently throughout history. We have witnessed several such movements in our own century and it is truly tragic that the Arab States were not willing to fully accept their displaced Arab brethren.
