Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940012987

The Lithuanian people have earned the admiration of the free peoples of the world for the dignity and spirited determination with which they have endured 35 years of captivity and oppression. Theirs is a daily struggle to maintain their language and tradition. and to achieve religious freedom and basic human rights. If the much heralded detente between the United States and the Soviet Union is to become a viable relationship. there must be a relaxation of curbs on religious and personal freedom in the Soviet Union. This includes the recognition by the Soviet Union of the right of Lithuanians and others to emigrate if they so choose.
