Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940010611

This program is an effort to bring to the attention of the general public the terrible plight of the Soviet Jews and to bring pressure to bear on the Soviet authorities to cease persecution of political prisoners. The name of the man I "adopted" is Eduard Kuznetsov. Mr. Kuznetsov was first arrested for participating in a public reading of Mayakovskys poetry in Mayakovsky Square. He was sentenced to 7 years in a labor camp for that socalled crime against the Soviet State. By the time of his release from prison. Kuznetsov had developed intense feelings toward his Jewish heritage and he decided to emigrate to Israel. A few months after his marriage to Sylva Zalmanson. a young Zionist and engineer from Riga. Kuznetsov was arrested for allegedly attempting to hijack an airliner to Israel.
