Almost all Lithuanian Jews were executed by the Nazis. After the war. Russia once again dominated Lithuania. beginning a policy of deportation and russification. The Soviet control of Lithuania represents a gross contravention of international law. But the issue is not simply one of political sovereignty. It has become a question of the right of a people to an ethnic and cultural identity. For 50 years the Soviet Union has made a concerted effort to destroy the Lithuanian Nation by the diffusion of its population. It has been estimated that from 1944 to 1950 350.000 Lithuanians were deported. Since then. the Soviet Government has conducted a massive settlement of Russians in Lithuania and a corresponding dispersal of Lithuanians over the hinterlands of the U.S.S.R. Stalinistic terror tactics have been replaced by the application of administrative and economic pressure. but the policy remains methodically effective.
