Speech #930352333

Bronia Chernoglaz. the wife of an imprisoned Soviet Jew. and Mr. Aharon Shpilberg. who was recently released after 3 years of incarceration in a Soviet prison. Our meeting demonstrates our concern and interest in the fight for the freedom of emigration of all Soviet Jewry. Jews in the Soviet Union have been denied the most basic human rights. including the right to emigrate. the right to worship. and the right to live as Jews. David Chernoglaz Is a young agronomist from Leningrad who was sentenced almost 5 years ago to imprisonment for alleged "antiSoviet propaganda." He is now incarcerated in Vladimir Prison near Moscow. living in conditionr so Inhumane as to threaten his health and his very life. His wife. Bronia Chernoglaz. succeeded in emigrating to Israel. along with their young daughter. subsequent to Davids imprisonment and is now engaged in a campaign to obtain his release. He has not received her letters. to which he is entitled. and no communication with him has been successful in recent months. In September. when I joined with 10 other New York Congressmen in adopting "prisoners of conscience" as part of a national campaign to focus attention on the plight of Soviet Jewry. I "adopted" David Chernoglaz as my prisoner. My efforts to obtain information about him from Soviet authorities. and to communicate with him at Vladimir prison. have been fruitless. Also meeting with our congressional delegation was Aharon Shpilberg. a former Prisoner of Conscience. who spent more than 3 years in Soviet prison camps for alleged antiSoviet activities. and who has been traveling around the world since his release describing the harassment of those seeking emigration and the severe conditions in these prisons. He has been trying to spur world action to alleviate the plight of our brethren in the Soviet Union. Mr.
