Session #93 · 1973–75

Speech #930330720

Given the recent disclosures of U.S. involvement in the overthrow of the democratically elected Allende government. the involvement over the years of North American academics in Chilean scholarly efforts and exchange. this is fitting and deserving of support. If each State university would open its doors to a few graduate students or visiting faculty members. with the support of the local Congressperson. it would demonstrate not only to foreign academics but to our own Latin Americanist scholars a sense of fairness and justice. In the past we have granted refugee status to Cubans and Hungarians and it now behooves us to renew our efforts on behalf of the Chileans whose lives and careers have been radically undermined by our foreign policy. I submit that refugee status also be extended to them and that we again consider a termination of all military aid to a regime which has so clearly and blatantly denied all civil and human rights to its populace.
