The United States has 6 million Jews. about 3 percent of its population. The overwhelming support that the U.S. public has given to Israel since its birth in 1948 surely is not predicated on the desires of its citizens of the Jewish faith. I will support the cause of the democratic government in Cyprus and that of the Greek Cypriot refugeesand oppose the aggression of Turkey because I know I have a moral obligation to do so. I also know that despite the suggestions by some in the House to the contrary. the United States will not flag in its support of Israel because it is in our national interest to continue that support as well as a moral imperative.
