Session #93 · 1973–75

Speech #930327906

I vehemently disagree with the Presidents contention that a cutoff of aid will only prolong the Cyprus crisis. Anything less than an immediate and total cutoff of aid to Turkey can only serve to strengthen Turkeys grip in the island. This will prolong the suffering and misery for more than a quarter of a million Greek Cypriot refugees on Cyprus. There is no room left for compromise. Compromise inevitably means concession. and having the issue go unresolved for as long as it has represents the ultimate concession in the eyes of millions of Greek Americans who have viewed with justifiable bitterness the inaction and unresponsiveness of the U.S.
