Speech #930288701

Mr. Speaker. 100 years ago a group of Mennonite farmers emigrated from Russia to the central plains of Kansas. The Mennonites left their native landsthe steppes of Russiabecause a hundredyear immunity from established religious orthodoxy and military service in Russia was being threatened. They sought and found in Kansas a home where they could once again work and worship without fear of repression. It is to that group of immigrants that we owe gratitude today. They brought to Kansas the strong Anabaptist convictions still evident in many areas of the Midwest today. hardy farming skills and a revolutionary new seed wheat that would lead this Nation to the agricultural prosperity and prominence it now enjoys.
