President. I have. over the years. witnessed firsthand in the field the humanitarian programs undertaken by these agencies all around the world. In several areas. their presence has meant the difference between life and deathfor refugees in need. for children suffering the effects of famine and hunger. In countless countries. the UNDP has contributed significantly over the past two decades in helping to promote essential economic devlopment programs. Hand in hand with local governments it has worked to close the gap between the rich and the poor. and to achieve greater economic progress. In the Middle East. UNRWA has helped to meet the countinuing humanitarian needs among the refugees. Given the hopeful changes toward a lasting peace in the Middle East. our country and the international community must not lose sight of the important role and contribution of UNRWA.
