Mr. President. the Senate Subcommittee on Refugees held a hearing this morning on U.S. policy toward Chile and on the continuing human rights. refugee and humanitarian problems in that country following the military overthrow of the previous government. I can only say that the testimony we received from members of the study mission which I dispatched to Chile following an invitation from the junta confirms previous reports by a series of respected international groups. including Amnesty International and the International Commission of Jurists. of the deplorable condition of basic human rights in that country.
