Greenwood Lake. after which the village is named. comprises a 9mile long. 1mile wide body of water. stretching into the State of New Jersey. In addition to its esthetic beauty and recreational facilities. the lake is a watersupply source for thousands of New Jersey residents. The Village of Greenwood Lake is history rich. originally inhabited by the LenniLenape Indians. a branch of the Algonquin Tribe and later settled by Dutch and English immigrants in 1609. During the Revolutionary War. the residents of the Greenwood Lake area were responsible for making a 500yard Iron chain which spanned the Hudson River from West Point to Constitution Island. preventing the British from sailing up the Hudson.
