Martin. said in a recent interview: "Many Americans have forgotten that our real emotional involvement in IndoChina affairs began In 1954. with a characteristic American humanitarian response when we helped move almost a millionmostly CatholicVietnamese from North to the South. They abandoned everything of material value. choosing to become penniless refugees in the South rather than remain under the totalitarian rule of Hanoi.... Our present commitment arises from an even more characteristic American traitour determination and pride that we finish what we set out to do. And in this case. it is to leave Vietnam economically viable. militarily capable of defending itself with its own manpower. and its people free to choose their own government and their own leaders.
