It casts us in the role of a people willing to compromise on basic moral principles simply to improve our balance of trade. I thought I was no longer capable of being shocked by anything the President might do or say. But I found out how profoundly shocked I could still be when the President stated in his commencement address at the Naval Academy. that it was not the business of the United States how the Russians treated Jews seeking to emigrate. Because of this attitude of callous indifference. the Russians felt no compunctions whatsoever about conducting mass arrests of Jewish activists in the days before the Presidents trip. or cutting off their phone lines. or simply harrassing them as they walk down the streets. The President has as much as said to the Russians that they can do whatever they want to the Jews and we will say nothing and do nothing.
