A tragic episode of World War II. however. was the forced incorporation of Lithuania into the Soviet Union in 1940. which brought to an end the existence of Lithuania as an independent nation. Since that time. Soviet rule has meant the oppression of the Lithuanian people. and the suppression of Lithuanian culture. While the massive deportations of Lithuanians. which took place during the first 10 years of Soviet rule. no longer occur. the denial of freedom and liberty remains a harsh fact of Lithuanian life. With this awareness in mind. I urge my fellow Congressmen and all the people of the United States. who know the joys of political freedom and individual liberty. to support the people of Lithuania in their efforts to obtain freedom from Soviet domination and suppression.
